massage treatments

Have you been thinking about getting a massage but don’t really know much about the various benefits or which type of massage will best suit your individual needs? Then it’s time to ask us here at La Spa, just what can massage do for you?

Got aches and pains? Feel generally run down? Just don’t have any get up and go? Have you thought about getting a massage? If you answered, “Well, we all have aches and pains but you just have to take a couple of paracetamol and get on with it, sure massage is only for athletes and couples on holiday,” then we’d like you to think again.

For example, did you know that massage not only helps you relax and de-stress, but actually lowers blood pressure, boosts your immune system, alleviates pain and improves flexibility? And that’s just for starters.

Let’s take a closer look at the many benefits of massage.

Massage can:

  • Alleviate bodily aches and pains and improve the range of motion in your joints,

  • Relax and repair injured, tired or overused muscles,

  • Improve the elasticity and youthfulness of your skin,

  • Promote tissue generation, reducing the visibility of scars and stretch marks,

  • Improve circulation by pumping oxygen and nutrients around vital organs,

  • Enhance the immune system by stimulating the lymph flow – the body’s natural defence system against cold and ‘flu,

  • Relieve migraine,

  • Reduce spasms and cramping,

  • Ease dependence on medication as massage releases endorphins, the body’s natural pain killer, into your bloodstream,

  • Assist with shorter and more comfortable pregnancies.

In addition to these very powerful physical benefits, massage can also be used to help manage stress. After a massage session you can expect to feel a sense of mental wellness and clarity. Massage has been shown to help decrease anxiety and fatigue and increase energy and concentration, meaning you’ll feel mentally as well as physically improved by your massage experience.

Best of all, after a therapeutic massage session, you’ll have the best night’s sleep you’ll have had in a long time!

Understanding the different types of massage treatments can help you decide which massage is right for you.

Here is a brief overview of the main types of massage available at La Spa.

Holistic Massage

Is the name given to all massage treatments; these break down into sub-categories of different massage styles from around the world. Each has its own unique benefits.

Indian Head Massage

Reduces stress and sustains mental wellbeing

Swedish Massage

Encourages circulation in the body and stimulates muscles

Hot Stone Massage

Provides positive energy and deep heat penetration to muscles

Aromatherapy Massage

Treats the body for specific ailments using essential oils

Lomi Lomi Massage

Is a Hawaiian massage using sweeping movements to relax the mind and body

Ki Massage

Is a light touch massage encouraging positive energy and wellbeing

Reflexology Massage

Uses specific pressure points on the hands and feet to stimulate bodily organs and the nervous system

During a massage, your massage therapist uses their hands and fingers to press and manipulate your skin, tendons, ligaments and muscles. The strokes gently move your blood, oxygen and lymph to various tissues and organs to support healing wherever your body needs it. The result is a level of physical and mental rejuvenation that leaves you feeling stronger, healthier and happier.

Lipstick Application Tips

January 27th, 2012

6 Quick Lipstick Tricks! PART TWO

Since Valentine’s day is just around the corner we thought now would be a great time to talk about that kisser of yours. Are your lips Valentine’s-ready? To make sure they are, here are a few lipstick application tips to make the most of your pout…

If you haven’t already seen PART ONE of our quick-and-easy guide to making the most of your lipstick then check it out here.

So on to part two… Our final three tips are all about application: If you need to plump up that pout or keep your lippy on for longer these tips are for you!

  • Lipstick Application

Using a lip liner and lip brush is the best combination for applying lipstick as it gives you greater control of the application. Apply the liner starting at one corner and tracing around your lip to the other corner, but avoid going right into the corners of your lips. Then apply your lipstick once with the lip brush, blot with a tissue, and reapply. Apply a third time if you want a stronger look. Another tip: try coating your lips with foundation to smooth and soften your lips before applying your lipstick. Your lipstick colour should stay on for hours – except for times when your mouth is busy doing other things of course!

  • Keeping Lipstick Fresh

Lipstick Application TechniquesNo matter what colour lipstick you choose, apply lip liner to the outline and then use it to fill in the fleshy part of your lips, smudging slightly as you go. You can then follow with a gloss or lipstick but if you’re looking for ultra staying power use matte. You can always apply a thin layer of gloss over your matte lipstick to add shine. Another tip: when wearing a red lipstick, use a brown lip liner all over the lips first, as the red pigment will then last longer.

  • Creating Fuller Lips

To get a bee-stung pout a-la Rosie Huntington-Whitely (http://bit.ly/tDymbB) hold off on the botox treatment and try a little artful lip design instead. The trick to remember here is that light brings forward, dark recedes; light, glossy colours reflect the light making your lips appear larger while dark, matte colours will make lips appear smaller.

So, how to do? First, using a lip liner close to your natural lip colour, trace the outer edge of your lips ever so slightly outside the natural line. Blend the liner into the centre of your lips with a lip brush to avoid a harsh edge. Use a deeper shade of that lip colour at the outside corners of your lips and then apply the slightly lighter shade to fill in the rest. Finish with a long-lasting gloss and don’t rub lips together as this will only reduce shine.

We hope these six tips on creating the perfect lip come in useful during your next make-up application. If you have any great tips you would like to share please leave a comment!
If you want perfect lips for your next big occasion, call in to La Spa for a full make-up treatment.

The 7 step guide to perfect eyebrows with HD Brows

January 21st, 2012

In case you haven’t already heard the eye-popping news, La Spa Therapie Malahide (one of only a handful of salons in Ireland) now offer HD Brows, the ultimate high definition brow-shaping beauty treatment.

We’ve already been raving about HD Brows on this blog, giving you a run down on what this treatment involves and why the HD brow look is becoming a total beauty must have. You can check out that blog here.

Now, we’d like to take you a little further into the world of HD Brows by revealing the seven steps to the HD Brow technique.

Step One – Preparation & Assessment

During the initial consultation your HD stylist analyses your face shape and eyebrow requirements and together you decide which brow shape will best suit your personality, your style and your facial features.

Step Two – Tinting

A high definition tint is used to even out or darken your eyebrow colour accordingly.

Step Three – Waxing

A specially blended HD wax is used to painlessly and precisely remove unwanted hair from the brow area.

Step Four – Trimming

Specialised HD scissors are used to trim back long, wiry and unruly hairs to create a neat and tidy brow line.

Step Five – Threading

Threading, the ancient Eastern art of hair removal, involves using a special thread to blend hairs into the brow area, precisely removing unwanted hairs from the brow, creating a streamlined look.

Step Six – Tweezing

Any stray leftover hairs are tweezed out to perfect your HD brow.

Step Seven – Finish

The treated skin is wiped down with a soothing lotion, hair follicles are closed using a skin calming tonic, and special mineral powders are applied to the area to calm and camouflage any redness. The HD Brow Beater wand then sets the hairs into place for an immaculate finish. Your stylist then either uses a HD Brow pencil or HD eyebrow palette to fill in any gaps in the brows. Finally, your HD stylist will give you individual advice on after care at home.

HD Brows founder, Nilam Patel, says her revolutionary brow shaping technique can truly transform your look. “You can create a huge difference to the face,” Nilam says. “You can change someone’s features; almost look like you’ve given them a bit of a face lift by having a decent arch in their brow.”

We’ll let Nilam tell you more about the origins, techniques and benefits of HD Brows herself in this short video. Enjoy!

If you want to get the HD Brow look for yourself, get in touch with us at La Spa and make an appointment.

Why You’ve Got to Try Acupuncture

January 13th, 2012

acupuncture benefitsAcupuncture – the ancient holistic therapy that promotes all-over wellbeing – is now available at La Spa Therapie Malahide! So what is acupuncture and what exactly are the benefits of sticking lots of tiny little needles into your skin? And does it hurt?

Well, La Spa’s resident acupuncture expert, Frederic Simeoni, is here to explain…

Hi, I’m Frederic, and I am your acupuncture therapist at La Spa Therapie Malahide.

Acupuncture promotes physical and emotional wellbeing and relieves pain and discomfort caused by bodily imbalances. This ancient Chinese holistic therapy involves inserting fine sterilised needles into predetermined points on your body in order to restore health and promote wellbeing.

Acupuncture isn’t painful. The sensation of acupuncture points being inserted can feel unusual if it’s your first time, and certain acupuncture points may be more sensitive than others, but the initial sensation is very short-lived and the end result is very calming and pleasing.

The reason I highly recommend acupuncture is because it is such an holistic treatment with a host of benefits, including:

Physical Wellbeing

Our diet, mental stresses and hectic lifestyles can play havoc with our energy (what the Chinese refer to as Qi). Acupuncture helps to redress the balance by applying acupuncture needles to points on the body that are deficient and in need of energy. The result is an overall feeling of improved health and vitality. Respiratory conditions like asthma, allergies, sinusitis and rhinitis are all relieved with acupuncture. Acupuncture can also have a positive effect on strengthening your immune system, relieving premenstrual and menopausal symptoms, sleep disturbances and insomnia.

Emotional Wellbeing

Depression, anxiety, fatigue, mood swings – emotional side-effects of a physical imbalance – can all be addressed with acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture pressure points on your body access both your physical and emotional needs and the insertion of acupuncture needles at those points redresses that balance wherever it is needed. After an acupuncture session you will feel both physically and emotionally recharged.

Stress Reduction

Regular acupuncture treatment is a great way to relieve stress as the acupuncture needles re-balance your energy flow, drain away stress and strain and totally relax body and mind.

Pain Reduction

Relief of chronic and acute bodily pains is one of the most common applications of acupuncture treatment. Ailments such as arthritis, back and neck pain, joint sprains, digestive discomfort, menstrual aches, migraines and headaches can all be relieved by acupuncture.

Acupuncture has been practised the world over for thousands of years and is still praised today as a life-enhancing treatment suitable for all ages and lifestyles. Celebrities like Elle Macpherson, Gyneth Paltrow and many high-profie athletes proclaim the benefits of acupuncture .

If you’d like to know more before you try, call in for a consultation and I’ll answer all of your questions. I’m happy to help!

What do you think about acupuncture? Are you already a devotee or are you thinking about trying it for the first time? Let us know your thoughts.

The La Spa Guide to Silly Season Beauty Survival

December 20th, 2011

Health and Beauty Tips for Festive SeasonWith all the fun of the festive season it can be easy to blow off your usual health and beauty routine as you embrace the moment – eating, drinking and generally being merry (in between long bouts of laziness and obligatory family games). And that’s great! We highly recommend getting properly into the swing of things this Christmas and New Years – go on and enjoy yourselves!

But to survive the holiday madness with your good looks still in tact, take a few tips from us girls at La Spa. We always have a few basic beauty tricks up our sleeves – for those just-in-case moments – and we’re happy to share them with you.

Here are a few cheap and cheerful beauty tips for surviving this holiday season…

Emergency Balm

Every girl should carry a tin of Vaseline (or something similar) in her purse. A good petroleum jelly-like substance has a multitude of uses. A good balm can prevent cracked lips, add gloss to lipstick, smooth and shape brows, or even moisturise lashes before curling. You can use it to exfoliate your lips when removing red wine and dark lipstick stains; rub it in to cracked skin to soothe and relieve dryness; use as a gentle eye makeup remover, a shaving balm, a split-ends repairer… the list goes on and on! Readily available in just about every shop you can think of and costing next to nothing, your little tin of petroleum jelly will be your best buddy in times of need.

Fresh Breath on a Platter

Spicy dinner party? It’s not always practical to carry around a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and mouthwash, but there is another way to refresh your mouth after you’ve had your fill of the finger food: grab a sprig of parsley or slice of lemon from the platter and have a chew. Parsley (that green garnish usually left over on a plate) is a natural breath deordoriser, and lemon acts as a natural breath mint as the acidity helps destroy bacteria in the mouth. If the thought of sucking on a sour lemon makes you squirm, just squeeze some into a glass of water for a refreshing, palette-cleansing drink.

Eye Repair Care

After a big boozy night out, tired eyes can really suffer. Grab some cotton balls, run them under a cold tap, squeeze to drain then place them on your eyes for 10 minutes or so. The coolness will improve circulation, reduce swelling and restore bright eyes. If you’re the planning-ahead type, put the wet cotton balls in the freezer on some wax paper over night for even better results. It’s also a great excuse for a cheeky forty winks!

Happy Feet

A long day gift shopping, traipsing up and down the high street, can leave your feet in a bad way. When you get home, use a combination of hot and cold soaks to relieve tired and swollen feet. First, soak your feet in a tub of warm water and sea salt for 10 minutes, then alternate with a cold water soak for 10 minutes, and repeat. The warm water eases soreness while cool water reduces swelling. When you’re done, elevate your feet to drain built up fluid. Then massage to stimulate circulation and apply lotion leaving them soft and fresh as a daisy.

Get Hands On

Your hands also need special care at this time of year. Keep mitts covered in the cold, do some occasional simple hand exercises to relax and improve circulation, and remember to apply a replenishing moisturiser after every hand wash to prevent skin from drying, cracking and prematurely ageing. Keep some hand cream in your purse and one by any sinks at home and your hands will always be in good condition. If you are out of lotion, luckily you have that petroleum jelly in your purse; that’ll also do the trick.

And finally…

Drink Water

How many times have you heard this one, right? Well there’s a reason for that. Water hydrates, detoxifies and replenishes every part of you. Water not only (…take a deep breath) acts as an appetite suppresant, relieves headache and body pains, helps your brain function more clearly, regulates your body temperature, helps prevent joint cramps and sprains, aids in digestion, increases metabolism, improves your immune system, relieves fatigue and flushes toxins from your organs… (phew!) it also replenishes skin tissue, moisturises and improves skin elasticity, and makes your skin look young and fresh. In other words, water – free, easily accessible water – makes you beautiful. So make sure you’re drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day – more when you’re drinking alcohol and eatting rich, fatty foods – and every bit of your body will thank you for it.

We hope these few tips keep you in good nick during the festive season. Don’t forget if you need a little extra TLC to come in and see us at La Spa Therapie Malahide!

HD Brows are here at last! Get perfect eyebrows only at La Spa Therapie

December 13th, 2011

ATTENTION ALL EYEBROWS!

Over plucked? Under groomed? Out of shape? Barely there? If you’ve been tweezed and terrorized, waxed and worried or just plain ignored and in desperate of some eyebrow TLC then La Spa Therapie has some great news for you!

Introducing HD Brows!

HD Brow Treatment For Perfect Eyebrows(Cue trumpets and wild applause)

HD Brows, the unique seven-step eyebrow shaping treatment that has taken the beauty world by storm, has finally come to Ireland with La Spa Therapie leading the way as one of only a handful of salons in the country that currently offer this amazing beauty service. Thanks to Katie – our very own fully trained HD Brow technician – the HD Brow look can soon be yours!

For those confused eyebrow owners not already in the know, the HD Brows beauty treatment is a must-have for the well-groomed face. Already a huge hit in the UK where the HD Brows brand was born (finding instant favour with celebs and fashionistas alike) Irish girls have been clamouring to get this amazing brow treatment here in Ireland.

So, currently sporting a raised eyebrow and would like to know more about La Spa’s HD Brows? Read on for our Q&A.

Q. Why do I need HD Brows?
A. Well-groomed, stylish eyebrows can really sculpt your face and transform your look. The right brow shape and colour can accentuate your eyes, take years off your face and make you look neat and well presented at all times without the hassle of daily brow plucking and pruning. The HD Brows treatment will give you that look.

Q. What does the HD Brow treatment involve?
A. The HD Brow treatment is a seven-stop eyebrow shaping course that focuses on design. It involves a combination of techniques including tinting, waxing, threading and specialist HD Brows products.

Q. Will I get the results I want straight away?
A. Most people will get the HD Brows look after just one session. Sometimes it can take a few visits to perfect the brows depending on the amount of work required. However we guarantee you will definitely see a big improvement after one visit.

Q. How often will I need the HD Brows treatment?
A. The length of time the results last depends on how quickly your hair grows back and how well your hair holds colour. On average you would want them done every 4 weeks to maintain the perfect look.

Q. Can I maintain my brows at home?
A. Yes. We supply the full range of HD Brows products so you can enhance your brows at home in between visits.

Q. I have over-plucked brows. Can I still get the HD Brow look?

A. Sure! Your stylist can put you on a re-growth programme that will train your brows into shape over a course of visits. To speed up your re-growth and maintain nice eyebrows in between visits to the salon, you can use HD Brows products at home that stimulate growth and make eyebrows appear fuller and more defined.

Q. Can I choose an eyebrow shape?
A. Absolutely. Brow shapes are tailored to the individual, as they have to suit your look and personality. Your brows can be made dark or light, thick or thin, sharp or soft. Your input is important in deciding the best shape and look for you. Katie will consider your hair growth, colouring, face shape and overall look when consulting with you on your brow design.

Book early to avoid disappointment!

Katie’s brow perfection techniques will be made available at both La Spa salons in Malahide and Drogheda. Make sure to call ahead for an appointment. See you (and your soon-to-be-beautiful brows) at La Spa!
